Gaming Therapy

There is one hobby that so many people overlook wellness. Video game therapy. Gaming therapy is something that helps me in my daily life when things get a little too stressful. Being able to bring the mind into an interactive world where I can hunt and kill enemies. Now that is something that can relieve stress.

With systems such as the Wii, virtual reality, and other gaming platforms, there are even more ways to get up and move. Technically, there are lots of ways to cheat at these games, but if you do it correctly, there should be no excuse to have fun in an interactive world while getting up to move. For someone with a chronic pain condition, like myself, these types of games are perfect if you want to get exercise without straining your body.

My favorite genre of games to play are the JRPG games such as the Final Fantasy series and Kingdom Hearts. Just as with reading books or watching movies, fantasy video games can help you escape from reality. That is something that allows people who stress out easily to find comfort in fantasy video games.

With Kingdom Hearts III finally releasing this week, I am excited to see how all the previous games come together. One big theme about this series is the struggle between darkness and light. It’s the perfect comparison for those struggling with mental health issues. Darkness would represent the various dark thoughts that come to mind. The never-ending struggle to find the light in the everyday stress is something I can see fans of the series can relate to. It is not just a series. It reflects humanity and my own mental struggle with anxiety.

Playing the Game

If you are interested in the series of Kingdom Hearts, and have yet to play the games this is the perfect time to get into them. There is a single game disc called Kingdom Hearts: Story So Far that holds all the games along with cutscene movies to catch up with the series. If you’re already a fan, I hope we can all enjoy Kingdom Hearts III

Social Time

One thing I feel is vital with wellness is using social time. As humans, we need social interaction to function. For me, as an only child, being social with others is essential. I did not have that kind of communication when I was growing up.

Being social with friends and those you care about, physically, can help to ensure those negative thoughts from coming to you. At least that is my experience. With my anxiety, loneliness does more harm than good. All or most of my friends are usually busy, live too far away, or there are only certain times where I can visit.

However, the unfortunate side of this is that because I am an Empath, I become exhausted. Being “too” social can be an issue too especially for those who are introverts. The best thing to do is to find a balance. You need to know when you need to be social and when to be alone to decompress.

Since I spend a lot of time by myself lately, I am so happy that I will spend time with my partner this week. We may only have a small amount of time, but this time is precious. I talk to them every day online, but it is so much different from seeing them in person. When I look at them in person, I can hold them, kiss them, and embrace them. It is something you cannot do while on the other line of an internet connection or phone.

Consistency in Medication (update)

In the last blog entry, consistency in medication is essential for wellness. I have not been taking CBD every morning. Unfortunately, this has made my mood and anxiety worse than usual.

My emotions were off and on for a few days or weeks. I realized that it was because I did not take my tincture every morning. I ended up crying in fits over small things that worried me and feelings of uselessness and heartache. Once I could talk this out with my partner, I realized what was going on. CBD helps me so much with my anxiety that as long as I take it regularly, I do not need prescription medication for it.

The fact that I figured out that the issue was my lack in the consistency in medication, only explains why it is so important. Since I am also sensitive to the energies of the moon and things like that, keeping a constant calm is essential. If my energy is out of whack, they will amplify those emotions. For example, the blood moon is coming up, and the change in the magnetic pull of the Earth is happening. Thanks to these instances, if I do not keep my essence calm and contained, I will lash out or have various anxiety attacks.

Since I have studied and done exercises from The Path of Energy, have given me the ability to sense these energies and have a better understanding of the world around me. I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone. Not only does working with chakras can help you with spirituality, but it can help you focus on the things important in life.

New Year’s Changes

I learned a lot over the past year. I learned who to trust and who not to. I learned a lot about wellness which made me realize just how much I want to write with wellness and work on advocacy for myself and others. So many people dismiss chronic and mental illnesses. For the new year, I want to begin researching and working on using this blog to help myself and my audience. I will be advertising my blog more on Twitter and Facebook. I feel as though the Universe has been telling me that I need to work at home and focus on my writing, learning other skills such as marketing and research along with attempting to find online customer service jobs that only require a laptop and a headset. Both of which I already have.

I will be focusing on not only achieving at least a part-time income but also my health in all areas. Moving out of my current home is a big part of that focus. There are so many who believe that living with family is better than being homeless or on your own. However, since I have been assessing my own situation and mental stability, I have realized that getting out on my own with my significant other is the best way for me to gain a better mental status as well as the ability to do yoga, meditation, and light (at first) exercise in order to manage my chronic pain symptoms that come with my possible Fibromyalgia.

I know that my therapist agrees that I need to get out of here for my own mental health. I will be continuing to see her, but I have a feeling that once I leave this current environment that I will only need to see her less and less. I do not believe my anxiety will be able to be cured right away naturally, but having my own freedom will most likely allow my issues to lessen. It will give me the ability to focus on what I need to do to make money in my own time, do schoolwork, and cook the foods that my body can handle and help me gain the physical body that I want and need. I will focus on finally getting to a rheumatologist so that I can get my chronic illness looked at and diagnosed so I can treat it properly.

I hope that all of you have a wonderful new year, and enjoy the content I will be looking into next year.

Blessed Be!

The TENS Unit and Chronic Pain

As with many of these discussions, I am going to use something to talk about that I have found useful in the management of my chronic pain. The TENS unit can be bought in any major drug store or can be from a prescription. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator. Using the pads given with the unit, the aim is to place them on the parts of the body that are sore and using different currents, it will give a message to the muscle and stimulate the nerve enough to ease the pain.

The source I am using is from a website for Santa Cruz Core, Fitness and Rehab. In the article, Jaimi Jansen explains that using the TENS unit and devices like that can help to with physical therapy and chronic pain symptoms. They describe the reason for this being that it is a non-invasive way to help patients with chronic pain due to injuries or other reasons both unknown and known. They say that post-injury patient can use this technology in order to reduce pain and swelling in the area where they were injured. Since the swelling itself can interfere with proper function or movement of body parts it can help the process of healing greatly. (Jansen, October 18, 2017, para 2-3)

The electrical currents cause the muscles to contract at different intervals allowing the muscles to regain strength and ease tension. They also explain that with orthopedic conditions or chronic conditions, it can help to help the blood flow better allowing the blood to repair and heal the body.

Another article from Verywellhealth.com explains that the TENS unit is not usually a part for the treatment of fibromyalgia but it is something to ask about. Doctors do not usually suggest it as a way of treatment. It also suggests that buying a unit on your own can cost from $25-100, but the benefit of getting a prescription is that they will most likely be sent to a physical therapist in order to learn how to use it properly since using a unit incorrectly can aggravate the muscles.

For me, using the TENS unit on a day where my pain is very high pain day is very relaxing. I can do crafts, write, or anything else relaxing while allowing the electrodes to massage the muscles that ache so much. There are a lot of muscle spasms that can happen with Fibro, and it can really work out the muscles that are tight very well and it honestly feels just like a mini massage. Though, I do know that you have to be careful. There are certain spots such as the spine and the area where the heart is that cannot have the pads on because the electricity can interfere with the health of the heart and the nerves in the spine.

It is also very important to read the directions thoroughly before using the TENS unit in order to use it. For example. Someone who has metal in their body cannot use it because the metal can interfere with the electrodes and be harmful to health. Those with heart problems can’t use it either because it can stimulate the blood vessels and the heart too much and cause problems. My mother has a double hip replacement with metal, so despite all the pain she suffers from still she cannot use my TENS because of the metal. The TENS is an amazing little device that can help to alleviate pain. I highly suggest this, but to also do research to see if it is right for the individual. As with all alternative medicines, you need to speak to a doctor before using it.
